Evensong and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament

As Anglo-Catholic Episcopalians, we incorporate many liturgical practices handed down to us by our Roman Catholic siblings in the faith. The liturgy of Evensong and Benediction is one of these. (Our Sunday-morning recitation of the Angelus, devotions with the Ever-Blessed Virgin Mary, is another.)

Evensong is a sung form of Evening Prayer, grounded in our Anglican tradition. "Benediction" is shorthand for the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, a liturgy in which we meditate on the Real Presence of Christ's Body. Our reverence for the sacramental presence of Christ's Body and Blood is but one expression of our belief that Christ has ascended into all times and places, and is powerfully present not only in the consecrated bread and wine, but also in and with every human person.

When we contemplate in this solemn liturgy the presence of Christ among us, we are invited to reflect more deeply on our shared baptismal calling to seek and serve Christ in every dimension of congregational life: in our shared parish mission, and in our diverse individual vocations.

At St. Paul's we celebrate Evensong and Benediction on the Saturday evenings before four feasts, on Saturdays at 5:30pm (check the calendar):

  • Last Sunday after the Epiphany (late February or March)

  • Second Sunday after Pentecost (which on the Roman Calendar is the Feast of Corpus Christi, or Body of Christ, in late May or early June)

  • Feast of St. Mary the Virgin (August 15, or the nearest following Sunday)

  • Christ the King (late November)
